During spring break, my 6-year-old granddaughter wandered into my room, spotted my travel notes, and hopped onto my lap.
"I can read now, Grandma. Can I try?" she asked, carefully sounding out: J-A-P-A-N travel itinerary.
Then came the big question: "Grandma, you're going on the road again? Can you take me with you? I can carry all the carry-on—I'm a big girl now!"
Charmed by her adorable offer, I made a deal: "I'll travel physically, you'll travel digitally—we'll connect through internet magic and digital art."
She smiled—her eyes pointed toward her pink table—we sealed it with a pinky shake, and just like that, my first character as a New Moon Girl—Luna—was born!

1. ARRIVAL & RESPECT
The Ritual: Chozuya (Water Pavilion Purification)
The Journey: Beneath the looming cedars by the iconic red Torii gate of Lake Ashi, Luna holds the wooden ladle. Pure mineral water rinses over her hands—a symbolic washing away of the city’s restless morning energy.
The Message: Every sacred journey begins with cleansing. Purify your hands, clear your mind, and enter with respect and gratitude.
2. SMOKE & GEOTHERMAL HEALING
The Ritual: Jokoro (Sacred Incense Pavilion)
The Journey: Next comes the Jokoro, where fragrant smoke rises into the clear mountain air. Wafting the healing incense over tired legs and uneasy thoughts, the ancient therapeutic embers do their work, echoing the geothermal warmth of nearby Owakudani.
The Message: Sacred smoke calms the mind and elevates the spirit. Ancient embers breathe through me.
3. ONSEN DETOX & HEALING
The Ritual: Sacred Onsen & Dragon Water
The Journey: Immersed in the misty, mineral-rich hot spring waters with the gentle Dragon Spirit watching over her, Luna releases all fatigue and fear, collecting the sacred Healing Water in a clear crystal vessel.
The Message: Misty waters wash away fatigue and fear. I soften, release, and remember who I am.
4. SECRET GARDEN & LUNA'S MISSION
The Ritual: The Sanctuary & Luna's Sacred Choice
The Journey: Tucked away behind the five-story pagoda lies the secret sanctuary—a hidden Japanese garden and koi pond. Here, under the impossible convergence of the Full Moon and New Moon at the exact same time, Luna begins her Passage of Fire. Her mission: to bring holy, healing water back home to offer restoration to those who need it most.
The Message: Under the union of Full Moon & New Moon, I accept my sacred choice. I carry the gift of holy water home.
